What is Long Term Care?
Long term care is what people need when they can no longer perform everyday tasks by themselves. The cause can be chronic illness, disability, cognitive disorder, or simply the aging process. Long term provides many services to provide care for those affected such as help with day-to-day activities or skilled nursing care. The services may occur in their home, nursing home, or other nursing facility.
It is important to understand the Activities of Daily Life (ADL's) that determine when long term care is appropriate. They are mobility, transferring (i.e. chair to bed), unassisted eating, bathing, dressing, using continence, and using the toilet. Basically the activities everyone should be able to do on their own every day.
