Long term care can be very expensive. The cost depends on the amount and type of care you need and where you get it. Below are some average annual costs for some long term care services.
Nursing Home Costs
According to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2001, the national average cost of nursing home care was $56,000 per year ($153 per day). The actual costs could be higher since items like therapies and medications where not included in the cost.
Assisted Living Facility Costs
In 2001 the National Center for Assisted Living reported assisted living facilities are charging an average annual fee of $22,476 per year ($1873 per month). This includes rent and most other feeds but some residents may pay higher if their level of care is higher.
Home Care Costs
The U.S. Department of Labor in 2001 also reported the national average cost of part-time basic home care ranged from $12,000 to $16,000 per year. Home care cost can be significantly more expensive when a nurse is needed instead of a home health aide. The costs also vary depending on the frequency of visits, type of care required, and length of each visit. It becomes very expensive when home care is required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
